Lost in the Flood

For some time now, I’ve been reading about this Noah’s Ark theme park in Kentucky.  Its goals include promoting the bible and teaching creationism.  Okay, fair enough.  I think creationism is a synonym for ignorance but to each his own.

Here’s where it gets tricky though.  It’s a private, for profit business that received large tax breaks.  Hmmm, red flags there but okay, plenty of private businesses receive tax breaks.  This type of business receiving tax breaks crosses the line as far as I’m concerned, but hey, live and let live, right?  The good people of Kentucky must be on board with it.  It’s their tax money. I do wonder if they would have been okay with their tax money going toward the theme park if it promoted some other religion or god forbid, atheism. What would an atheist theme park look like, you may be asking?  I think they’re called science museums 🙂

But wait, there’s more!

The key line:

Critics object to Ark Encounter, a religious organization, availing itself of government breaks while excluding prospective hires based on religion. As a condition of employment, all Ark Encounter applicants must sign a statement of faith, attesting to the creationist vision and disavowing homosexuality, same-sex marriage and premarital sex.

Oh no they didn’t!  Cmon man!  They’re taking public money and discriminating at the same time.  That’s where I draw the line.  The whole thing is absurd to me but whatever. I’m a devout non-believer so it’s not aimed at me.  I’ll be very curious to see if they can make a go of it financially or if they’ll, wait for it, drown in red ink.

Really, this blog post is mostly an excuse to tie in a current event news story to a great song.  I was at this show in 2002,  It was the highlight of the evening for me.

Hey man, did you see that, those poor cats are sure messed up
I wonder what they were gettin’ into, or were they just lost in the flood?
