Big Little Lies

No, I’m not talking about Trump or his cronies.  In fact, as you may have noticed, I’ve taken a short break from writing about politics here.  I’m talking about the HBO mini-series starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.  Is anyone watching this other than the Missus and myself?  While the sob-fest of This is Us gets all of the attention(and there is no way I will watch a second of that), Big Little Lies has quietly flown under the radar, despite a killer cast.

It tells the story of several mothers in Monterey, California. Outwardly, they’re living perfect lives.  They have beautiful houses overlooking the ocean and more money than they know what to do with.  However, money has definitely not made these people happy.  Underneath it all , their lives are churning.  The story is told in an “after it already happened” kind of way.  We learn in the first episode that someone is murdered.  We’re through the fourth episode now and we still don’t know who was murdered or who did it.  The funny thing is, it could literally be anyone at this point because there are so many undertones and different angles to it.  Just about every character has some sort of grudge against someone else.

If this sounds like a bit of a soap opera to you, you’re not far off.  I mean that though in the best possible way.  It’s not a cheese fest. It’s also shot in a way that accentuates the setting.  There are constant shots of the waves crashing into the beach.  It’s sunny California but it’s not warm.  It must be winter in Monterey.  People are wearing jackets outside.  It’s sunny but it’s not bright.  Everything looks blue/grey to me.  And the soundtrack!  Whoever has picked the music for this show deserves an Emmy!

The song they picked as their theme song is my latest ear worm. I can’t stop listening to this song. Kiwanuka has this world weary voice and behind it is this haunting background vocal.  I haven’t heard anything quite like this song and yet at the same time, it’s very familiar to me.  That doesn’t even make sense but that’s how it hits me. And the lyrics!  They fit this show perfectly.  Here’s the short version.

Did you ever want it?
Did you want it bad?
Ohhh, my
It tears me apart
Did you ever fight it?
All of the pain, so much power
Running through my veins
Bleeding, I’m bleeding
My cold little heart
Oh I, I can’t stand myself

And I know
In my heart, in this cold heart
I can live or I can die
I believe if I just try
You believe in you and I
In you and I
In you and I
In you and I

Did you ever notice
I’ve been ashamed
All my life
I’ve been playing games
We can try and hide it
It’s all the same
I’ve been losing you
One day at a time
Bleeding, I’m bleeding
My cold little heart
Oh I, I can’t stand myself

And I know
In my heart, in this cold heart
I can live or I can die
I believe if I just try
You believe in you and I
In my heart, in this cold heart
I can live or I can die
I believe if I just try
You believe in you and I
In you and I
In you and I
In you and I
In you and I
In you and I
In you and I
In you and I

Maybe this time I can be strong
But since I know who I am
I’m probably wrong
Maybe this time I can go far
But thinking about where I’ve been
Ain’t helping me start

Here’s the long version, which starts like a Pink Floyd song, with it’s lengthy buildup.

  1. It’s so good and I hear you on the theme song. It’s so haunting to me. I’ve tried to identify who the Music Sup on the show is and various sites have different credits. Dying to know because it’s a very specific palate of musical taste and I would find it hard to believe that it would be different people putting together that tapestry of sound.

I also really like the show and story. I like how every week it’s slowly releasing a little more about each character. It’s the best thing David E Kelley has done in a long time. Do you remember Picket Fences with Tom Skerrit?

Great blog post, Scott. And, per usual, were on a similar page.

  2. I’m enjoying the show. Great music and the scenery is beautiful. I’m also watching This is Us. Theses are the only new shows I’m watching right now.
