End of the World

Do I really think that Trump will blow up the world?  No, probably not.  However, the fact that it’s even a possibility, that there’s even a chance that he will make the wrong decision at a key moment, is real.  Get ready, Trump voter.  You’ll be spending a lot of your time trying to defend the indefensible these next four years.

On that cheery note, here are some cool songs about the end of the world.

Here’s a great but little known Queen song that roughly deals with the topic. From Wiki:

“’39” was May’s attempt to do “sci-fi skiffle“. “’39” relates the tale of a group of space explorers who embark on what is, from their perspective, a year-long voyage. Upon their return, however, they realise that a hundred years have passed, because of the time dilation effect in Einstein‘s special theory of relativity, and the loved ones they left behind are now all dead or aged.

Next up is a rare for me, foray into the grunge scene.  Here we have Soundgarden with their best known song, Black Hole Sun.  It’s a little vague, lyrically, but it does have an end of the world feel to it.

Here we have Floyd with their ominous sounding Goodbye Blue Sky, which recounts Waters’ feelings as a little kid in Europe in WWII.  Is there a weak song on The Wall?  No.  The answer is no.

Our next song is more of a love song, I guess.  Bruce Cockburn is saying, hey, if this is it man, I want to spend it with you. I love this song.

There are hundreds of good songs on this topic but I’ll finish with the most obvious choice.  The Grateful Dead seldom played Buffalo without playing Truckin.  A list like this would not be complete without REM. I hear this song and am immediately transported back to Third Base, the little dive bar that we lived in while in school at UB. I never did master all of the lyrics.  I certainly don’t feel fine right now but here are the full lyrics.

That’s great, it starts with an earthquake
Birds and snakes, and aeroplanes
And Lenny Bruce is not afraid

Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs,
Don’t mis-serve your own needs
Speed it up a notch, speed, grunt, no, strength,
The ladder starts to clatter
With a fear of height, down, height
Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
And a government for hire and a combat site
Left her, wasn’t coming in a hurry
With the Furies breathing down your neck

Team by team, reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped
Look at that low plane, fine, then
Uh oh, overflow, population, common group
But it’ll do, save yourself, serve yourself
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed
Tell me with the Rapture and the reverent in the right, right
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam fight, bright light
Feeling pretty psyched

It’s the end of the world as we know it
It’s the end of the world as we know it
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine

Six o’clock, T.V. hour, don’t get caught in foreign tower
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn
Lock him in uniform, book burning, bloodletting
Every motive escalate, automotive incinerate
Light a candle, light a motive, step down, step down
Watch your heel crush, crush, uh oh
This means no fear, cavalier, renegade and steering clear
A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline

It’s the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)
I feel fine (I feel fine)

It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

The other night I drifted nice continental drift divide
Mountains sit in a line, Leonard Bernstein
Leonid Brezhnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs
Birthday party, cheesecake, jellybean, boom
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam but neck, right, right

It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

It’s the end of the world as we know it
It’s the end of the world as we know it
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)

It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it (time I had some time alone)
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone)
