Low Light Buddy of Mine

It’s ear worm time again.  There are some songs that just immediately attack my senses.  That I love from the first second.  From the very first notes that I hear.  ’52 Vincent and Beeswing, both by Richard Thompson come immediately to mind.  Then there are those songs that I hear and maybe I like or maybe don’t even have an opinion on at first and then one day, I hear again and it just hits me in a different way.  Just about every King Crimson song from Discipline on falls into this category, with the exception of Three of a Perfect Pair, which I loved right away.

Iron & Wine are, without a doubt, my favorite modern band/artist.  I love the hushed, whispered songs of Creek Drank the Cradle and I absolutely love the psych/folk of The Shepherds Dog.  When Kiss Each Other Clean came out, it didn’t hit me in the way I was expecting it to.  I didn’t love it right away.  But it grew on me and now, I listen to it more than any other album of theirs.  Likewise, when Ghost on Ghost was released in 2013, I was underwhelmed by it at first.  I listened and then ignored it.  But now?   I just love it.  Especially, the two catchiest songs on there, Grace for Saints and Ramblers and Low Light Buddy of Mine.

Sam Beam’s voice is what draws me in but it’s his lyrics and music that keep me there.  The man’s lyrics are so dense and image laden, I seriously have no idea what he’s singing about half of the time.  I have to read them and try to decipher them like I did back in my English Literature classes as UB. I’m at a certain disadvantage some times with the religious imagery because it’s just over my head.

Low Light Buddy of Mine is one his simpler lyrics but still has a line like, “there’s new fruit humming in the old fruit trees”.  That line hits be like a ton of bricks. Give it a read.  And then a listen. Let me know what you think.

He’s in a white car waiting for the light to change
He’s a buddy of mine but I can’t complain
He can make a lot of money, he can touch his toes
He knows you never look until the lights are low

But I love you and you love me
So we never demand and we never agree
I love you and you love me
And there’s new fruit humming in the old fruit trees

He’s in a white car waiting in a parking lot
And he’s jealous of me and what we’ve got
He can buckle his belt, he can shine his shoe
But he can never end up where I found you

And I love you and you love me
So we don’t talk back and we don’t say please
I love you and you love me
And there’s new fruit humming in the old fruit trees

He’s in a white car waiting for the rain to pass
He’s a buddy of mine but that won’t last
Cause he ain’t the dumb grin on an empty cup
We both took him for when he showed up

Cause I love you and you love me
So we both get stuck and we both get free
I love you and you love me
And there’s new fruit humming in the old fruit trees
