There’s another interesting “religion” story in the news today. President Obama gave a speech yesterday about religious freedom at an american mosque. Here’s a key quote:
“We have to reject a politics that seeks to manipulate prejudice or bias, and targets people because of religion”
This seems more than reasonable to me and not all that controversial. This being a presidential election year, not everyone agrees. Here’s Marco Rubio:
“I’m tired of being divided against each other for political reasons like this president’s done,” . “Always pitting people against each other. Always! Look at today: He gave a speech at a mosque. Oh, you know, basically implying that America is discriminating against Muslims.”
May I please direct Senator Rubio to this?
Rubio is obviously playing to Trump supporters and hoping to win them over by throwing them a slab of red meat. However, isn’t this the type of thing that our enemies want? Isn’t their narrative that America hates and persecutes Muslims? And isn’t what the president said exactly how we counter that? President Bush went to speak at an american mosque right after 9/11, didn’t he? I truly wish the republicans had better presidential candidates. We’d all be better off for it.
