Gimme Some Hope!

I was going to write about guns today but honestly, I don’t have much hope that anything will change in the U.S. any time soon.  Second Amendment hardliners are way too entrenched to even agree to common sense proposals like better background checks and closing the gun show loophole.  I could write pages on this topic and probably will at a later date but today, I just don’t have much hope that things will change for the better, as it relates to gun violence. I thought President Obama spoke eloquently yesterday but he knows there is not much hope of change.

It’s Friday and some of us are feeling beaten down a bit.  We need hope that things will eventually change for the better.  And for me, the sure fire way to lift my spirits is through music.  So I’m going to post a link to a song that always makes me feel better, even if it has a slight  melancholy  feel to it.  Do me a favor and if you’re reading this, give it a listen, let me know what you think,  and then leave me a comment with a link to a song that lifts your spirits.  I promise to listen to whatever song you post.

This song, by the way, is by Roy Buchanan, who was a phenomenal guitarist and a soulful singer.  His career has been criminally overlooked.

  1. The gun debate is just another “G” element of the Republican party, IMHO. Republicans know that if middle America bothered to check their legislative and voting records, all available on the House and Senate websites, nobody other than billionaires would ever vote Republican. So they use wedge issues — God, guns, gays, and government, and now religion — to start fires of fear, hatred, and anger, followed by a promise that Republicans are the only “Constitution-loving patriots” able to handle these “problems”. Wave the flag and vote Republican if you’re a “real American”.

The damage this causes to America is absolutely inconsequential to Republicans. They’ll scorch the earth to get elected. And if they can’t get the votes they need by using fear, fake patriotism, and wedge issues, they’ll redraw voting districts, restrict voters, and even buy voting machine companies, as Mitt Romney’s son did four years ago. Watch the HBO documentary “Recount”, which shows just how easily electronic voting machines can be reprogrammed to miscount votes.

Republicans do this for two reasons: greed and power. They do absolutely nothing for middle America other than rhetoric. The House, under Republican rule for three sessions now, is the least productive House in US history. Guns are just the latest example of a portion of the population that can be brainwashed into believing that minorities and the “government” are coming for their guns, their children, or their property. And actually, it’s entirely about money: the gun lobby pours millions into electing Republicans to keep throwing gun and racism logs onto the fire, and Fox News is there to broadcast all of it while gun sales skyrocket. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Republicans are planning to take away Social Security, Medicare, voting and women’s rights, and all of the other “freedoms” they claim to adore by waving American flags everywhere.

The Second Amendment does not ONLY say that Americans have a right to “bear arms”. If the out-of-control gun crowd would actually bother to read it, they’d notice that it says “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Does anyone notice the first part of that sentence, that says “well regulated”? That includes even simple background checks, which gun nuts oppose while demanding the same kind of background checks for voters. Ironically, these very people are the misinformed voters.

And, finally, the gun crowd is still convinced that a sitting American president is, somehow, meeting with Muslims in a dark closet under a bare light bulb, ripping up the Constitution and plotting to overthrow America and impose Sharia Law. Most of this comes from Sean Hannity (a 2-time college dropout whose last job was a bartender at a bowling alley), who says that Obama (a Constititional Law Professor), doesn’t “understand” the Constitution. The stinging irony of this Fox News crap is that force-feeding this kind of fear and hatred for the purpose of getting elected so billionaires can run the country under the disguise of religion is EXACTLY what Sharia Law is all about.

But the dumbed-down portion of the population that gets its “news” from a “news channel” that tells the truth 6% of the time and outright lies more than 50% of the time is filled with too much fear to become aware of this themselves. And that’s a huge problem for the future of America, which is about to be taken over by the very billionaires they claim to hate. They already have Congress and the Supreme Court in their pockets. And Citizens United was the last thing standing in their way from taking over the voting process.

For those who hate Muslims because of what they see on Fox News, especially when a Muslim dared to construct the “Ground Zero Mosque”, well, that very same Muslim OWNS part of Fox News. Does that make Fox News a “Muslim brotherhood”?

Even harder for this crowd to swallow? White, right-wing Americans are the biggest terror threat in U.S., according to a new study. More than twice as many Americans have died in attacks by right-wing American groups than by Muslims since 9/11. Ooops.

Knowledge and factual information are more important than ever. It’s too bad that half of America gets both from people lying to them under blinking, flashing, waving, and spinning American flags.

  2. Wow is right… USA are you reading this?! I believe the average American agrees with common sense regulation. Just ask Sandy Hook, Columbine, Virginia Tech, Aurora, Roseburg, Charleston and all the others. So what do we as Americans do to stop gerrymandering, voting rights discrimination, rigging voting machines?! and Fox News from knowingly reporting false news?
What I would like to see happen in Congress is for the moderate Republicans to take back their party. I know some think that they don’t exist but they indeed do and they have allowed this craziness to happen. Boehner couldn’t keep it together and Kevin McCarthy doesn’t appear to be the one to do this either. On the Senate side…well to quote an article on Politico…”The GOP-controlled Senate is on track this year to confirm the fewest judges since 1969, a dramatic escalation of the long-running partisan feud over the ideological makeup of federal courts”.

Ok, enough of this for a Sunday morning. Now for the music. I loved Roy Buchanan, but my brother never disappoints. I’ve decided to let you choose a few from musicals that I love. I’m sure my brother hasn’t heard or listened to any of them (private joke?) and I can’t say that about much music out there that he hasn’t listened to. So enjoy brother! Feel free to listen to them all!!
